India have announced their 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana leading a blend of experienced campaigners and young talent.
The tournament starts on September 30 against Sri Lanka at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and will run until November 2, featuring matches across major Indian venues.
Key Talking Points from the Squad
Shafali Verma Omitted
The big surprise is the exclusion of opener Shafali Verma, whose last ODI was in October 2024. Yastika Bhatia has been picked as the backup opener. Shafali is currently playing for India A in Australia, and the selectors say she remains part of the long-term plan.
Renuka Singh Returns
Fast bowler Renuka Singh, sidelined since the WPL in March due to a stress fracture, has returned to the squad. She will miss the Australia ODI series to ensure full fitness for the World Cup.
Amanjot Kaur Managed Carefully
All-rounder Amanjot Kaur is being rested for the Australia ODIs to recover from a back injury. She is expected to play a key role in the World Cup, supporting Renuka Singh with the ball and contributing with the bat.
New Faces Rewarded
Kranti Goud and Shree Charani have been rewarded for impressive WPL performances. Goud took a six-wicket haul in England, while Charani bagged 10 wickets in her maiden T20I series against England.
Spin Department Lacks Leg-Spinners
India’s spin attack is strong with Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Shree Charani, and Radha Yadav, but the team lacks a specialist leg-spinner after Asha Sobhana was ruled out. Standbys Prema Rawat and Priya Mishra were considered but not included, leaving a potential gap against leg-spin-heavy teams.
With home support and a balanced squad, India’s women aim to capture their first World Cup title while addressing key areas ahead of the tournament.
