A 20-year-old Indian-origin woman was allegedly raped in a racially motivated attack in Walsall, West Midlands, UK, police said on Sunday. Authorities believe the assault was carried out because of the victim’s racial identity.

According to West Midlands Police, officers were called to the Park Hall area on Saturday after a woman was found distressed and sitting in the street following the assault. Detectives have released CCTV footage of the suspect and appealed to the public for help in tracing him.

“This was an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman, and we are doing everything we can to catch the person responsible,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation. He added that officers are reviewing CCTV and forensic evidence while following several leads.

Police have urged anyone who saw suspicious activity or has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward immediately.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. MP Zarah Sultana described the attack as “horrifying,” linking it to rising racism and misogyny, while Labour MP Preet Kaur Gill called it “deeply shocking” and demanded swift justice.
