The death toll from a train collision near Jakarta has risen to 14, with 84 others injured, authorities said Tuesday, as rescuers continued efforts to free survivors trapped in the wreckage.

The दुर्घटना occurred late Monday in Bekasi, on the outskirts of the capital, when a commuter train collided with a long-distance train.

Bobby Rasyidi, chief of state railway operator PT KAI, confirmed the updated toll, adding that evacuation operations were still underway.

Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said the operation was highly delicate, with some survivors still pinned inside twisted carriages.

Rescue teams separated the trains and used cutting tools to reach those trapped, witnesses said. Authorities believe the commuter train first struck a taxi on the tracks before being hit by the oncoming long-distance train. A women-only carriage suffered the most severe impact.

Taxi firm Green SM Indonesia said the vehicle involved belonged to its fleet and that it is cooperating with investigators. The company is part of Vietnam-based Green and Smart Mobility JSC, an affiliate of Vingroup.

After visiting injured passengers in hospital, President Prabowo Subianto said authorities would investigate the crash and announced plans to build a flyover at the site to ease congestion. He also acknowledged maintenance gaps across parts of the rail network.

The National Transportation Safety Committee is leading the investigation. Meanwhile, anxious relatives gathered at the scene and hospitals searching for loved ones, as disrupted commuter services — among the busiest in the world — faced cancellations.

Rail and road accidents remain a recurring concern in Indonesia. A similar collision in West Java in 2024 killed four people and injured dozens.
