How Suryakumar Yadav Pipped Hardik Pandya to Become India’s T20I Captain
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has revealed how he unexpectedly took over the role from Rohit Sharma after the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, edging out then vice-captain Hardik Pandya. In an interview with PTI, Yadav said he was informed about the decision just days before India’s tour of Sri Lanka, when then BCCI secretary Jay Shah personally called him.
“He called me three or four days before the Sri Lanka series and told me I would be leading the T20 team going forward,” Yadav said. Despite Pandya leading India in the 2022–23 phase and playing a crucial role in the 2024 World Cup win, the selectors opted for Yadav. The decision surprised many, given Pandya’s leadership experience and all-round impact.
Yadav indicated that the call was not sudden but the result of discussions within the leadership group, including Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and then head coach Rahul Dravid.
Hardik Loses Leadership Role
The shift didn’t stop at captaincy. Pandya was also removed as vice-captain, with Shubman Gill and later Axar Patel taking over the role.
Under Yadav, India soon established itself as a dominant T20I side, winning consistently in bilateral series before clinching the 2026 T20 World Cup title against the New Zealand national cricket team. The victory made India the first team to successfully defend the title and also the first to win it at home.
What’s Next
Following the World Cup triumph, Yadav has now set his sights on the cricket event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking the next big goal in his leadership journey.
