US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unexpectedly became the centre of online attention ahead of President Donald Trump’s Beijing visit.

After he was photographed aboard Air Force One wearing a grey Nike tracksuit linked by many internet users to former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. The outfit quickly went viral because it closely resembled the tracksuit Maduro was seen wearing earlier this year after being taken into US custody — an image that later turned into a widely shared meme online.

The photograph of Rubio was shared by White House communications director Steven Cheung, who jokingly referred to the outfit online as the “Nike Tech Venezuela.” The White House later added to the buzz by posting a comparison video featuring Rubio and Maduro in similar outfits, calling it a “full circle moment.”

Social media users across multiple platforms reacted instantly, with many turning the moment into memes while others speculated whether the outfit choice carried a political message ahead of sensitive talks between Washington and Beijing.

The discussion quickly spread to Chinese social media, where several commentators interpreted Rubio’s appearance as a deliberate show of symbolism. Some users claimed the tracksuit was meant to project toughness before meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while others dismissed it as a publicity stunt designed to attract attention during the diplomatic trip.

The episode also renewed focus on Rubio’s complicated relationship with China. Beijing imposed sanctions on him in 2020 over his criticism of China’s policies in Hong Kong and Xinjiang, including reports of restrictions linked to travel and entry.

According to reports, Chinese authorities may have quietly adjusted the Chinese transliteration of Rubio’s surname before his latest visit, allowing officials to navigate diplomatic complications surrounding the earlier sanctions.

Rubio is part of the senior US delegation accompanying Trump during the high-profile China visit, where discussions are expected to centre on trade tensions, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and broader strategic competition between the two global powers.

Despite the significance of the summit, Rubio’s tracksuit appearance unexpectedly became one of the most talked-about moments online ahead of the high-stakes meetings in Beijing.
