Jaishankar Holds Talks with Israeli, Iranian Counterparts Amid Soaring West Asia Tensions.
Amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday spoke separately with the foreign ministers of both countries to assess the situation and convey India’s concerns over the unfolding crisis in West Asia.
“Received a call this afternoon from FM @gidonsaar of Israel regarding ongoing developments,” Jaishankar posted on X. He later held a conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, saying they discussed the “latest situation in the region.”
The outreach reflects India’s diplomatic balancing act as it maintains strategic ties with both countries. Officials said New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation and has reiterated the importance of restraint and dialogue.
The conversations came hours after Israel launched a wide-ranging military operation targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities. Iran has claimed the strikes killed at least three top military commanders, including General Mohammad Bagheri, General Hossein Salami, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh — all key figures in Iran’s defense establishment.
The assault is being seen as the most significant military action on Iranian soil since the 1980s and has triggered strong warnings from Tehran of a powerful retaliation. The attacks have sharply raised fears of a regional spillover and broader conflict in the Middle East.
India has so far refrained from taking sides, urging all stakeholders to de-escalate and prioritize diplomatic solutions.
