‘I Was in the Room…’: Jaishankar Refutes Trump’s Claim on Mediating India-Pakistan Ceasefire Post-Balakot.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has firmly pushed back against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that he personally brokered peace between India and Pakistan during the 2019 Balakot crisis. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Jaishankar said, “I was in the room. That is not how things happened.”

Trump, during a campaign event last week, stated that it was his direct intervention that prevented a full-scale conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in the aftermath of the Balakot air strikes.

Jaishankar: India Took Independent, Calculated Decisions
Rejecting Trump’s version of events, Jaishankar reiterated that India’s response was entirely its own and made with composure and strategic clarity. “In diplomacy, it’s rarely the case that one person steps in and everything is solved. The decisions taken were deeply thought through and based on real-time assessments in Delhi,” he said.

He emphasized that India’s actions during the tense standoff were driven by national judgment and sovereign decision-making — not external influence or intervention.

Timeline of the 2019 India-Pakistan Escalation
February 14, 2019: A suicide bomber from Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed killed 40 CRPF personnel in Pulwama.

February 26, 2019: The Indian Air Force carried out air strikes on JeM training camps in Balakot, Pakistan.

February 27, 2019: Pakistan responded with an aerial incursion. IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was captured and later returned by Pakistan in a goodwill gesture.

Role of International Diplomacy
While the United States and other global powers like France did play a role in engaging with both countries to urge restraint, Jaishankar’s comments challenge the narrative that Washington orchestrated a ceasefire.

“There were certainly global conversations. We appreciate international concern, but India will always take its own decisions in its national interest,” Jaishankar concluded.
