Fans hoping to catch Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry may have to wait longer.
Jana Nayagan is now unlikely to release before April 30, with certification hurdles and the approaching Tamil Nadu Assembly elections clouding its theatrical plans. The latest update came not from the producers but from Canada-based distributor York Cinemas, which confirmed on its official X account that the film will not arrive in theatres before April 30. The announcement disappointed overseas fans who had already begun advance bookings.
Distributor Issues Statement
In a notice titled “Important Announcement of Jananayagan,” York Cinemas stated:
“Dear Patrons, Please note that the movie Jana Nayagan will not be releasing before April 30th. If you have any pending tickets and your refund has not yet been processed, kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest.”
The distributor also assured loyal members priority booking access once a new release date is finalised. However, no revised date was mentioned, reinforcing uncertainty around the film’s rollout.
CBFC Dispute Behind Delay
The postponement stems from the film’s ongoing certification battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Originally scheduled for release on January 9, the film ran into trouble after certification was withheld. The makers moved the Madras High Court, where a single judge initially directed the CBFC to certify the film. However, on January 27, a division bench set aside that order, stating the board should have been given adequate time to file its counter. The matter was sent back for reconsideration.
In February, producer KVN Productions withdrew its plea seeking directions to the CBFC, clearing the way for the revising committee to review the film. As of now, Jana Nayagan remains uncertified, and neither the producers nor the board have issued fresh statements.
Election Timing Adds Complexity
The uncertainty is further compounded by the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections beginning in April. Vijay is widely expected to contest through his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, making this release particularly significant in the timeline of his political transition.
With the election code of conduct likely to influence promotional activities, a pre-election release now appears improbable.
Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani. The film is reportedly a remake of the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari.
For now, the project remains in limbo — and fans continue to await clarity on when Vijay’s much-anticipated film will finally see the light of day.
