Japan lodged a formal protest with China after Beijing’s top diplomat Wang Yi accused “far-right forces” in Japan of seeking to revive militarism.
The remarks, delivered at the Munich Security Conference, drew a sharp response from Tokyo, which described the comments as “factually incorrect and ungrounded.” Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had issued a “stern demarche” through diplomatic channels, rejecting the characterization of its security policies.
Tokyo maintained that Japan’s efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities were driven by an “increasingly severe security environment” and were not aimed at any specific country. The ministry also stressed that Japan supports regional stability and opposes military expansion conducted without transparency.
The exchange highlights continuing tensions between the two Asian powers, whose relations have been strained by security concerns and disagreements over Taiwan.
