JD Vance Says He Hopes His Hindu-Raised Wife Eventually Embraces Christianity

US Vice President JD Vance has said that he hopes his wife, Usha Vance — who was raised in a Hindu household — will one day be “moved” by the Catholic faith and embrace Christianity.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Mississippi on Wednesday, Vance said, “Most Sundays, Usha comes with me to church. As I’ve told her, and as I’ll say now in front of 10,000 of my closest friends — do I hope that she is someday moved by the same thing that moved me in church? Yeah, I honestly do. I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, stressed that his wife’s faith has never been a source of conflict between them. “If she doesn’t, then that’s fine. God gives everyone free will, and that doesn’t cause a problem for me,” he said. The Republican leader added that their children are being raised Christian and attend a Christian school, reflecting the couple’s balance between personal faith and family unity.

Emphasising his broader view on faith in public life, Vance said, “I make no apologies for thinking that Christian values are an important foundation of this country. Anybody who tells you their view is neutral probably has an agenda. I’m at least honest that I think the Christian foundation of America is a good thing.”

Vance’s remarks come amid a rise in anti-Indian and anti-Hindu rhetoric in the US, particularly on social media. Recent Diwali posts by Indian-origin officials like Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and FBI Director Kash Patel drew hateful comments urging them to “seek Jesus” or “move to India”.

While Vance’s comments about his wife’s faith sparked mixed reactions online, the Vice President’s supporters praised his candour and his emphasis on personal belief and religious freedom.
