Jemimah Rodrigues Shines as Delhi Capitals Beat Mumbai Indians to Stay in Playoff Hunt

Jemimah Rodrigues overcame a testing start to her captaincy tenure by delivering when it mattered most, guiding Delhi Capitals to a crucial seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Vadodara on Tuesday, January 20, and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Chasing 155, Delhi got off to an aggressive start as Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee put on 61 for the opening wicket. Shafali struck a brisk 29 before being bowled by Vaishnavi Sharma, but Lee continued to dictate terms until a controversial stumping decision swung momentum. After a lengthy third-umpire review, Lee was adjudged out for 46, leaving Delhi at 76 for 2 and briefly on the back foot.

From there, Rodrigues assumed control. Showing composure under pressure, the skipper rebuilt alongside Laura Wolvaardt and navigated a tense middle phase marked by tight bowling and rising required rate. Rodrigues rotated the strike effectively and picked her moments to attack, ensuring Delhi stayed within touching distance of the target.

The match turned decisively in the final four overs. Rodrigues took on Nat Sciver-Brunt with a lofted six in the 16th over before using her range against Hayley Matthews to keep the chase on track. Her audacious reverse lap for four in the 18th over brought up a well-judged half-century and firmly tilted the contest in Delhi’s favour.

Marizanne Kapp applied the finishing touches, hammering Sciver-Brunt for a six over deep mid-wicket to seal the win with an over to spare. Rodrigues remained unbeaten on 51 off 37 balls, while Kapp added a brisk 10 not out.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians recovered from a poor start to post 154 for 5, riding on a composed 65 from Nat Sciver-Brunt and a fluent 41 from Harmanpreet Kaur. After early blows from Kapp and Nandni Sharma reduced Mumbai to 23 for 2, the pair rebuilt steadily. Harmanpreet attacked the spinners with authority before falling to Shree Charani, while Sciver-Brunt anchored the innings through to the end.

Delhi’s bowlers played a crucial role at the death, conceding just 11 runs across the 18th and 19th overs to keep the chase manageable.

Ultimately, it was Rodrigues’ calm leadership and ability to finish under pressure that proved decisive, as Delhi Capitals stayed alive in the playoff race with a victory defined by control, timing and nerve.
