J&K LG Reviews Security Measures Amid Protests Over Khamenei’s Death

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to assess the security situation across the Union Territory following protests over the reported killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel strike.

Sinha urged all communities to remain calm, stating on X: “Chaired a meeting to review the security situation across J&K UT. Called upon all communities to stay peaceful and calm. I salute the unwavering, synchronised resolve of our Police and security forces upholding law and order.”

Protests erupted in several districts, particularly in Shia-majority areas, with demonstrators chanting slogans like “Tum kitne Hosseini maroge…har ghar se Hosseini niklega” (“How many Hosseini will you kill…from every home, a Hosseini will rise”) and burning an effigy of US President Donald Trump.

As a precaution, the J&K administration ordered schools and colleges in the Valley to remain closed for two days. Police also appealed to media, social media users, and the public to exercise responsibility while sharing information related to security and public gatherings.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called for calm and peaceful mourning, emphasizing that authorities should exercise restraint and allow citizens to grieve without interference. Protests were also reported in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, with the All India Shia Personal Law Board holding a large demonstration at Lucknow’s Chhota Imambara on Sunday evening.
