Saba Karim Prefers KL Rahul, Not Shubman Gill, to Replace Kohli at No. 4.
With Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement leaving a crucial gap in India’s Test middle order, former selector Saba Karim believes KL Rahul—not Shubman Gill—should bat at No. 4 in the upcoming England series.
Karim argued that Rahul has both the experience and technique to handle the responsibilities of the position. “In Kohli’s absence, KL Rahul becomes key. He’s capable of absorbing early pressure and anchoring the innings. He’s matured significantly in the last couple of seasons and has proven himself in English conditions,” said Karim.
While Gill is widely seen as the natural successor for the No. 4 spot, Karim feels Rahul’s adaptability and recent form make him better suited for the role. Rahul has batted at No. 4 only twice in Tests—both times against England—scoring 108 runs at an average of 54.
However, moving him down the order would mean breaking up the successful opening combination he recently formed with Yashasvi Jaiswal in Australia. With Rohit Sharma’s retirement also in play, India’s top-order strategy could see a major overhaul.
