In a significant development in the South Calcutta Law College gangrape case, investigators have revealed.

That prime accused Monojit Mishra attempted to contact several of his “mentors” for help the day after the incident. However, those approached reportedly refused to intervene. The alleged gangrape took place on June 25 inside the college campus, where a 24-year-old first-year student was assaulted by three men. Currently in police custody are Mishra, students Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), along with 55-year-old security guard Pinaki Banerjee.

According to police, Mishra moved across multiple locations in South Kolkata — including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road — on June 26, trying to find someone to assist him. Mobile tower data confirmed his movements and also showed he was near Karaya police station at one point.

One of the individuals Mishra approached in Deshapriya Park — described as “influential” — reportedly assessed the situation and advised him to distance himself, refusing to get involved. Police also suspect premeditation. Call detail records show frequent communication between Mishra, Ahmed, and Mukherjee in the days leading up to the crime, indicating that the act may have been planned.

On the night of June 25, the three allegedly raped the woman inside the security guard’s room while Banerjee was instructed to stay outside. After the assault, the trio reportedly drank alcohol at the same location and told the guard to remain silent.

Later, they were seen having dinner at a dhaba on the EM Bypass before returning home the next morning. Investigations are ongoing, with police expected to file a detailed chargesheet once digital and forensic evidence is fully compiled. The case has sparked public outrage, with calls for swift justice and institutional accountability.
