Heavy rains that lasted nearly seven hours from Monday night to early Tuesday morning left large areas of Kolkata waterlogged, officials said.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned that a low-pressure trough moving north over Kolkata and South 24 Parganas could trigger heavy rainfall within 24 hours. The IMD also predicted that similar showers might affect the city and nearby areas around September 25, prompting Durga Puja organisers to stay vigilant.
“We have been instructed to run drainage pumps to clear the waterlogged roads,” a Kolkata Municipal Corporation official said.
