Woman Alleges Gang-Rape at Kolkata Law College; Three, Including Staffer and Ex-Student, Arrested.
A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped on the campus of South Calcutta Law College earlier this week, leading to the arrest of three individuals, including a college staff member, a current student, and a former student affiliated with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing.
According to police, the incident took place on Wednesday when the woman visited the college around noon to submit examination-related forms. In her complaint, she stated that she was waiting in the college union room when one of the accused ordered the campus gate to be locked. She was then allegedly taken to the security guard’s room and raped.
Following the complaint, police registered an FIR at Kasba Police Station and launched an investigation. The three accused—Monojit Mishra (31), an ex-student and former president of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit at the college; Zaib Ahmed (19), a current student; and Pramit Mukherjee, alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), a college staff member—were arrested on Thursday evening and night. Their mobile phones have been seized.
Mishra and Ahmed were apprehended near Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata, while Mukherjee was arrested from his home around 12:30 am. Police have conducted a preliminary medical examination of the survivor, secured the alleged crime scene, and recorded witness statements. A forensic examination is pending.
The accused were produced before Alipore court on Thursday. Police requested 14 days of custody; the court granted remand until the following Tuesday.
The incident has triggered strong political reactions. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticized the state government and police, alleging negligence. “The Chief Minister has no right to remain in office,” he said, pointing to the deployment of police outside Kolkata during the Rath Yatra festival.
BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya called the incident “horrific” and accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of failing to ensure women’s safety. Referring to a similar recent case at RG Kar Medical College, he said, “West Bengal has become a nightmare for women.”
In response, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim termed the incident “extremely serious” and said he would speak after receiving a report from the police.
