Mumbai rang in New Year 2026 with a spell of rain early Thursday, as light to moderate showers were reported across several parts of the city, including Mulund and Dadar.

The rainfall brought a brief winter chill to the usually humid metropolis, with morning temperatures dipping to around 21°C. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to see a partly cloudy sky with intermittent light rain through the day. In its 8 am forecast issued on January 1, the IMD said light showers could continue over the next 48 hours, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 29°C and 16°C, respectively.

The showers have also brought some relief from pollution levels. Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 122, classified as ‘moderate’, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Early morning drizzle greeted New Year’s Day walkers and commuters, while residents took to social media to report heavier spells in parts of the city as the morning progressed.

The IMD said there would be no significant change in minimum temperatures across Maharashtra over the next two days. However, a gradual rise of 2–3°C is expected in the subsequent four days.
