Inter Miami has officially announced that Lionel Messi, the club captain and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has extended his contract with the team through the 2028 MLS season.

Since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, Messi has been instrumental in Inter Miami’s rise in Major League Soccer, scoring 29 league goals this season and helping the team secure third place in the Eastern Conference, ensuring a spot in the playoffs.

Messi had previously suggested that Inter Miami could be the final club of his illustrious career. His arrival has not only boosted the team’s performance but also increased global interest in MLS and in the David Beckham-owned club.

“Inter Miami CF announced today it has signed Club captain, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup Champion, Leo Messi, to a contract extension running through the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season,” the club said in a statement. Speaking about his contract extension, Messi expressed his excitement at continuing with Inter Miami and his eagerness to play at the club’s new stadium, Freedom Park.

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here,” Messi said.

He added, “We’re all really excited about the moment when we can finally play at Miami Freedom Park. We can’t wait for it to be finished — to experience it from the inside, in our new home, and for the fans to enjoy it as well. It’s going to be something very special to play at home in such a spectacular stadium.”
