Lionel Messi has broken his silence following Argentina’s heartbreaking FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain, admitting the disappointment is “immense” while urging fans to take pride in the team’s journey to a second successive World Cup final.

Argentina’s dream of retaining the World Cup title came to an end on Sunday after Spain edged the defending champions 1-0 in extra time at New York New Jersey Stadium. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute, sealing La Roja’s second FIFA World Cup crown and extending their unbeaten run to a European-record 38 matches.

A day after the defeat, Messi shared an emotional message on Instagram, saying the pain of losing the final would linger but insisting the tournament should also be remembered for Argentina’s resilience and achievements.

“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also hold on to all the good… The matches we turned around, giving our all, matches that will forever remain in our memories, the support of an entire country that, together with the hard work and effort of this group, led us to be, once again, among the best in the world. Today it’s hard to fully appreciate what we accomplished, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” Messi wrote.

The Argentina captain also expressed gratitude to supporters for standing behind the team throughout the tournament and congratulated Spain on their triumph.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and every message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and be together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentinian. I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship,” he added.

Argentina entered the tournament as reigning champions and once again emerged among the competition’s standout sides. Lionel Scaloni’s men showcased their trademark fighting spirit in the knockout rounds, rallying from two goals down to defeat Egypt in the Round of 16 before staging another memorable comeback against England in the semi-finals.

However, Spain produced a disciplined defensive display in the final to neutralise Argentina’s biggest threat. Messi, who had inspired his side throughout the tournament, found little space to operate as Luis de la Fuente’s team controlled the contest.

Spain End Argentina’s Title Defence

After a goalless 90 minutes, Spain finally broke the deadlock in extra time when Ferran Torres finished clinically after coming off the bench. Fellow substitute Nico Williams also played a crucial role by adding pace and creativity to Spain’s attack.

Messi finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists but was unable to produce another decisive moment in the final. Spain’s organised defence ended his streak of contributing either a goal or an assist in every knockout match across the last two World Cups.

The statistics reflected Argentina’s struggles. The defending champions failed to register a single shot during regulation time, with their first attempt arriving only in the 116th minute. By then, they were trailing 1-0 and playing with 10 men following Enzo Fernandez’s sending-off.

Spain, meanwhile, felt they had opportunities to settle the contest earlier.

“I think the match should have been decided much earlier. Emiliano Martinez’s saves prevented us from winning sooner,” Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said.

“But this is a World Cup final and you have to dig deep even against 10 men, and we were prepared for anything.”
