Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance for its strong showing in the Mumbai and Maharashtra civic body elections, saying voters had endorsed the NDA’s focus on good governance and public welfare.

As counting trends pointed to a decisive saffron sweep across urban Maharashtra, Modi said the mandate reflected growing public trust in the alliance’s development agenda. In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Thank you, Maharashtra! The people of the state have blessed the NDA’s agenda of public welfare and good governance. Results from the municipal corporation elections show that the bond between the NDA and the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger. Our performance and vision for development have touched people’s hearts.”

According to early trends, the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance is leading or has secured victory in 24 of the 29 municipal corporations that went to polls across the state. In Mumbai, the Mahayuti alliance is ahead with 112 seats, comfortably leading over the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar).

If the trends are sustained, Mumbai is poised to have its first mayor not aligned with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, signalling a major shift in the city’s civic politics.

The results triggered celebrations among leaders of the BJP and Shiv Sena. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari congratulated the alliance, while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the party headquarters in Mumbai to thank workers and voters for backing the NDA’s development and governance plank.
