Satara Woman Doctor’s Suicide Sparks Outrage: Police Officer Accused, CM Orders Stringent Action
A 28-year-old woman doctor at a government hospital in Phaltan, Satara district, allegedly died by suicide in a hotel room on Thursday night. The doctor, originally from Beed district, reportedly left a note on her palm accusing Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping and sexually harassing her over the past five months. The note also named Prashant Bankar, son of her landlord, alleging mental harassment.
Immediate Police Response and Investigation
Following the incident, the police sent her body for post-mortem and launched a forensic examination of the suicide note. The accused police officer has been suspended, and a search is underway for both accused individuals.
The local Superintendent of Police confirmed, “A case has been registered against the two under charges of rape and abetment to suicide. The accused PSI has been suspended. Our teams are trying to locate both accused. A thorough probe and stringent action will be taken.”
Chief Minister Orders Strict Action
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home Department, immediately contacted the Satara SP and directed the suspension of all officers named in the suicide note. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that “stringent action must be taken against all accused in the case.”
Family Alleges Foul Play and Pressure
The victim’s relatives allege police and political pressure forced the doctor to manipulate post-mortem reports. A family member said, “She tried to complain but received no protection. She must get justice.” Another relative added, “She was bright and ambitious, but extreme work pressure and harassment drove her to take this step. The culprits must be punished.”
Maharashtra State Commission for Women Intervenes
The Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) has taken cognisance, instructing the Satara Police to act against the accused and investigate inaction regarding her prior complaints. Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar stated that strict instructions have been issued to ensure a thorough investigation.
Political Reactions and Criticism
State Minister Pankaja Munde emphasized the need for a detailed investigation and warned against media trials, stating, “Justice must be served. It is tragic that an educated doctor, who saves lives, faced such harassment. The Home Minister and CM will ensure justice.”
Legislators Demand Accountability
Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe called the suicide deeply concerning, urging stringent action against those responsible. Environment Minister Shambhuraj Desai assured an impartial probe, promising, “The accused will not be spared. Satara police is doing all it can.” State Health Minister Meghna Bordikar noted that the doctor had never formally reported harassment at work.
Opposition Criticizes Government Inaction
Congress leaders, including Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar and Sachin Sawant, criticized the state government for failing to act on previous complaints and allowing police exploitation. Wadettiwar tweeted, “When the protector becomes the predator… how will justice be delivered?”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey described the incident as heart-wrenching and questioned whether Maharashtra was moving towards “Jungle Raaj,” demanding immediate arrests.
Trinamool Congress Reacts
The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, also attacked the BJP, highlighting the government’s “zero moral outrage” and criticizing the media’s silence on the matter.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are piecing together the sequence of events, and post-mortem as well as forensic findings are expected to be crucial in determining the extent of criminal conduct and guiding legal proceedings.
