Mahavatar Narsimha, the animated feature directed by Ashwin Kumar and produced by Kleem Productions in association with Hombale Films, has officially entered the eligibility list for the 98th Academy Awards.

The film, which performed strongly at the Indian box office, will now compete for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2026 Oscars. It joins a slate of international contenders including KPop Demon Hunters, Zootopia 2, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle.

Meets Academy Qualification Norms
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, eligible animated features must run over 40 minutes, consist of at least 75% animation, and complete a qualifying seven-day theatrical run in one of six designated U.S. metropolitan areas. The film has met these requirements. Under updated rules, eligible animated features may also submit for Best International Feature, a category that Mahavatar Narsimha has qualified for as well.

The eligibility list for the 98th Oscars includes a wide range of titles such as Arco, The Bad Guys 2, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Dog of God, Elio, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, Light of the World, and The Twits.

Expanding Franchise
Mahavatar Narsimha is the first film in a long-term franchise plan. Upcoming instalments include Mahavatar Parshuram (2027), Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029), Mahavatar Dwarkadhish (2031), Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033), and the two-part Mahavatar Kalki scheduled for 2035 and 2037.

In earlier interviews, director Ashwin Kumar described the franchise as an effort to build an Indian animated universe capable of standing alongside Hollywood’s large-scale superhero worlds. While acknowledging budget limitations, he said the team aims to bridge the gap through innovation and gradual growth.

Key Dates
The Academy will announce the nominations for the 98th Oscars on January 22, 2026. The ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be broadcast live on ABC.
