Maintain Peaceful Eid: Delhi High Court Issues Directions to Police Amid Uttam Nagar Tensions

The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the city police and administration to ensure a peaceful and secure atmosphere for the observance of Eid in Uttam Nagar, where tensions have persisted following a recent clash.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia stressed that police bandobast must instil a strong sense of safety and reassurance among residents. The court directed authorities to take all necessary steps within the law to prevent any untoward incidents during the festival.

The order came while hearing a plea filed by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, which flagged concerns over possible communal unrest in the area ahead of Eid.

Underscoring the importance of maintaining harmony, the court observed that Eid is a pious occasion meant for celebration and said it was the duty of authorities to ensure that public life remains undisturbed. It also directed that no individual or group be allowed to engage in any activity that could potentially trigger tension.

The bench further ordered that heightened security arrangements should continue until Ram Navami to ensure sustained peace.

Police authorities informed the court that sufficient personnel, along with Central Armed Police Forces, have already been deployed in Uttam Nagar since March 5.

The directions come in the backdrop of the killing of a 26-year-old man during a clash between two families amid Holi celebrations earlier this month. Several individuals, including a minor, have since been detained in connection with the incident.
