Sanju Samson’s 89 Powers India Past England to T20 World Cup Final

In a thrilling T20 World Cup semifinal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India edged England by 7 runs, setting up a title clash against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. India posted a massive 253, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup knockout match, with Sanju Samson top-scoring with a sublime 89 off 42 balls. England fought back valiantly, led by 22-year-old Jacob Bethell, who blasted 105 off 48 balls, but fell short at 246.

Samson’s innings, featuring seven sixes and eight boundaries, set the tone for India’s batting assault, complemented by fiery contributions from Ishan Kishan (39 off 18) and Shivam Dube (43 off 25). Despite opener Abhishek Sharma faltering early, Samson’s controlled aggression anchored the innings.

The defining moment came with Jasprit Bumrah at the death. Deployed by captain Suryakumar Yadav in the 16th and 18th overs, Bumrah conceded just 14 runs from 12 balls, including three perfect yorkers in the 18th over, crushing England’s momentum. Critical fielding, led by Axar Patel with three stunning catches, ensured India maintained the upper hand.

England’s chase, powered by Bethell and Will Jacks’ 77-run partnership, remained competitive until the final over. With 30 needed off six balls, Bethell was run out on the first delivery, ending England’s hopes and handing India a hard-fought win.

This victory marks India’s fourth T20 World Cup final appearance. Samson, who recently scored 97 against West Indies, once again proved he can dominate under pressure, blending timing and power seamlessly. India now awaits New Zealand, who beat South Africa in the first semifinal, for a blockbuster final showdown on Sunday.

India’s performance was a showcase of modern T20 cricket — explosive batting, disciplined death-over bowling, and sharp fielding, ensuring that even in a high-scoring thriller, they held their nerve when it mattered most.
