Mbappe Brace Propels Real Madrid to La Liga Summit

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Saturday, January 24, moving to the top of La Liga. The win puts Madrid two points clear of Barcelona, who face Real Oviedo on Sunday. Mbappe, La Liga’s top scorer, reached 21 league goals this season, continuing his pivotal role in Madrid’s campaign.

Under new coach Alvaro Arbeloa, Madrid have won three consecutive matches across all competitions. “Mbappe and Vinicius are the best players in the world. They press, they work for the team, and their reward comes in the form of goals,” Arbeloa told Real Madrid TV.

The match at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica was cagey in the first half, with both sides creating few clear chances. Early in the second half, Vinicius drove into the box and saw his low cross blocked, only for Mbappe to slot in from close range.

Villarreal pressed for an equaliser, but Moreno missed a gilt-edged chance. In stoppage time, Mbappe earned a penalty after being fouled by Alfonso Pedraza and cheekily converted it to seal the win. Villarreal remain 10 points behind Madrid with a game in hand, while Espanyol’s 3-2 loss to Valencia leaves them seven points adrift of the Yellow Submarine.
