Michael Hussey: ‘I’d Probably Be 5,000 Runs Ahead of Sachin Tendulkar if I Debuted Earlier’

Former Australian great Michael Hussey has opened up about how his late start in international cricket may have cost him a shot at surpassing Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s records. Known affectionately as “Mr. Cricket,” Hussey made his international debut at 28 after years of dominating domestic cricket, a delay he believes limited his career statistics.

Speaking on The Grade Cricketer YouTube channel, Hussey reflected humorously on what might have been. “I’d probably be about 5,000 runs past Sachin Tendulkar… most centuries, most wins, most Ashes wins, and the most World Cup wins. Then, unfortunately, I wake up in the morning, and it’s just a dream,” he said. “I would have loved an opportunity earlier, but when I got picked, I had a great understanding of my game.”

Hussey scored 12,398 runs across all formats in 302 matches, including 22 centuries. His Test tally reached 6,235 runs, while he made 5,442 in ODIs—both significantly lower than Tendulkar’s 15,921 Test runs and 18,426 ODI runs. In T20Is, Hussey notched 721 runs, while Tendulkar played just one match, scoring 10 runs.

Before his international breakthrough, Hussey amassed nearly 23,000 first-class runs at an average of 52, including 61 centuries in 273 matches. His delayed debut was largely due to the dominance of the Australian team in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which made opportunities scarce.

Tendulkar, by contrast, debuted for India at just 16 and went on to a 24-year career, setting records that remain unmatched, including 100 international centuries. While Hussey never matched those numbers, he played a key role in Australia’s 2007 World Cup and Champions Trophy triumphs and earned a reputation for consistency and match-winning contributions.

Hussey’s remarks, made in a light-hearted and reflective tone, highlight how timing and opportunity can influence sporting legacies, sparking renewed conversation about what might have been if he had started his international career earlier.
