Minnesota Lawmakers Targeted in Deadly Attack: Melissa Hortman and Husband Killed, John Hoffman Injured.

Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in what authorities are calling a “politically motivated assassination,” Governor Tim Walz confirmed on Saturday. The attack, which shook the state’s political core, also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife wounded.

The coordinated shootings took place in the early hours of Saturday morning at the homes of the lawmakers, according to Champlin Mayor Ryan Sabas. Speaking at a press briefing, Walz described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy” and mourned the loss of a “great leader” and “dear friend.”

“This was not just a horrific act of violence. It was a targeted attack on our democracy,” Walz said.

Details of the Incident
Law enforcement officials are still piecing together what happened, but early reports suggest the suspect may have posed as a law enforcement officer to gain access to the homes. A person familiar with the investigation told the Associated Press that the suspect’s motives appear to be politically driven, although the investigation remains in its early stages.

The authorities have not publicly identified a suspect but have launched a statewide manhunt.

Victims: A Profile in Public Service
Melissa Hortman, 53, was a Democratic powerhouse in Minnesota politics, having first been elected to the state House in 2004. She served as Speaker from 2019 to 2024, leading the legislature through some of the state’s most transformative years. An attorney by training, she was also a mother of two and known for her advocacy on climate change and gender equality.

John Hoffman, a Democratic State Senator first elected in 2012, was also wounded in the attack. He is the founder of Hoffman Strategic Advisors and previously served as vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, which governs the state’s largest school district. Hoffman’s wife, who was also injured, is currently being treated in hospital. The couple has a daughter.

Rising Threats Against US Lawmakers
The attack comes amid growing concerns over political violence across the United States. In recent years, lawmakers have increasingly reported being harassed, doxxed, or threatened — part of a larger trend of escalating political tension nationwide.

The gun safety advocacy group GIFFORDS condemned the attack in a statement Saturday afternoon, calling it a “chilling reminder of the dangerous climate elected officials face today.” “This is not how democracy should function,” the group said. “Political disagreements must never be settled with violence.”

A State in Mourning
Vigils are expected to be held across Minnesota in the coming days. Tributes from lawmakers, community leaders, and citizens have poured in for Hortman — remembered as a principled leader who mentored many — and for the Hoffmans as they recover from this targeted assault.

As Minnesota grapples with the aftermath, questions loom over the motive, security failures, and what this means for the broader climate of political discourse in America.
