Mithun Chakraborty Named Bengal Govt Advisor With Cabinet Minister Rank

Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as an advisor to the West Bengal government, with the state according him the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister.

The appointment was notified by the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (IAS Cell) on October 6, 2026. The order was issued in the name of the Governor of West Bengal after approval from the competent authority.

According to the government notification, Chakraborty’s appointment has been made “in the interest of public service” and will take effect immediately. It will remain in force until further orders.

The appointment comes under the state’s Information & Cultural Affairs Department, giving Chakraborty a formal role in matters related to culture and the entertainment sector. The order was signed by West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal.

One of Bengal’s most prominent figures in Indian cinema, Chakraborty has enjoyed a career spanning several decades in both Hindi and Bengali films. He made his acting debut with Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa in 1976 and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film.

He subsequently became a major star, particularly known for his work in mainstream Hindi cinema, while continuing to remain closely associated with Bengali culture and the film industry.

The latest appointment gives the veteran actor a formal administrative role in the state’s cultural affairs, adding a new dimension to his long public career.
