INDIA Bloc to Corner Government Over Pahalgam Attack, Trump Ceasefire Claims in Monsoon Session.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, beginning July 21, is set to commence under heightened political tension, with the opposition INDIA bloc preparing to launch a multi-pronged attack on the government over national security, electoral processes, and foreign policy concerns.
At the heart of the opposition’s agenda are demands for accountability over the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and allegations of voter suppression during Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
During a virtual meeting on Saturday, leaders from 24 opposition parties finalised a joint strategy to raise at least eight key issues in Parliament. These include the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, foreign policy lapses, the Gaza crisis, delimitation concerns, and rising crimes against SCs, STs, women, and minorities.
Opposition Seeks PM’s Response on Terror and Ceasefire Remarks
Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari, said the opposition would demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direct response on the Pahalgam attack and other matters of national importance.
“Parliament is more important than travelling abroad,” Tiwari told PTI, criticising what he described as the prime minister’s silence on issues of national security. He called the Pahalgam incident—where multiple jawans were killed in a terror ambush—”the biggest issue concerning 140 crore Indians.”
Tiwari also pointed to recent revelations of an intelligence failure in the attack, saying that despite the confession, the perpetrators remain at large. “No action has been taken so far. This is unacceptable,” he added.
Concerns Over Voter Disenfranchisement in Bihar
The opposition bloc is also set to raise strong objections to the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar. They allege that the exercise is being manipulated to disenfranchise marginalised communities, likening it to an “undeclared Emergency.”
“There is a threat to people’s voting rights,” Tiwari warned. “What’s happening in Bihar is vote-bandi—just like note-bandi, it’s a blow to democracy.”
Push for J&K Statehood, Opposition to One Nation One Poll
Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary D Raja said the INDIA bloc will also challenge the government on issues such as the push for ‘One Nation, One Poll’, the ongoing delimitation process, and the continued denial of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
“These are all attempts to centralise power and weaken democratic institutions,” Raja told PTI.
Government Response on Operation Sindoor Expected
While the INDIA bloc has demanded that PM Modi personally respond on Operation Sindoor and Trump’s ceasefire claims, sources suggest the prime minister may not address the House directly. However, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to make a detailed statement on the military operation, having chaired two high-level briefings on the matter Friday evening.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has assured that the government will respond appropriately during the debates. “We are ready to discuss Trump’s remarks and any issue the opposition raises,” he said.
With the stage set for a confrontational session, both sides appear determined to dominate the narrative in the House, as political temperatures rise ahead of crucial state and national elections.
