Mumbai Deluged by Heavy Rains; Flights, Trains Hit, BMC Orders Shutdown.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Tuesday, triggering severe waterlogging, travel chaos and widespread disruption. The IMD issued a red alert for the city and suburbs, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. At Mumbai airport, 155 departures and 102 arrivals were delayed, according to Flightradar. IndiGo advised passengers of traffic snarls and waterlogging en route to the airport, leading to operational challenges.

The BMC declared a holiday for government, semi-government and civic offices, except essential services, and urged private firms to opt for work-from-home. Schools and colleges across Mumbai and the Konkan region, including Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, were also shut.

Train services on the Central Railway were delayed 20–30 minutes as rain and poor visibility slowed movement. Key roads in Andheri, Sion, Dadar TT, and Mumbai Central were submerged, halting traffic. Hindmata, Andheri Subway, Eastern Express Highway and Vasai reported severe flooding, with 200–400 people stranded in Vasai’s Mithagar area.

In the 24 hours ending 8 am Tuesday, Vikhroli received 255.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Byculla (241 mm), Santacruz (238 mm), Juhu (221.5 mm) and Bandra (211 mm).

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the downpour continues.
