NATO Chief to India, China, Brazil: Cut Russia Ties or Face Harsh Sanctions.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a stern warning to India, China, and Brazil, saying they could be hit with 100% secondary sanctions if they continue trading with Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine war. Speaking after a meeting with U.S. lawmakers, Rutte said, “If you’re in Beijing, Delhi or Brasília, it’s time to rethink your Russia ties. These sanctions will hurt—badly.”
Rutte’s remarks came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a massive arms package for Ukraine and threatened punitive tariffs on any country purchasing Russian exports, unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days. “Call Putin now and push for peace. If he doesn’t budge, this will bounce back hard on Brazil, India, and China,” Rutte urged.
U.S. Senator Thom Tillis backed the measures but warned the 50-day deadline could give Putin time to intensify attacks. “Any land gained in that window should not be considered at the negotiation table,” he said. To bolster Ukraine, Rutte confirmed NATO allies in Europe would fund fresh arms shipments, while the U.S. would handle delivery. The package includes advanced air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition.
On long-range weapons, Rutte said specifics are still being worked out between the Pentagon, NATO command in Europe, and Ukraine, but confirmed it would include both offensive and defensive systems.
