Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold on Debut at Ostrava Golden Spike with 85.29m Throw.
India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra clinched gold on debut at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike meet on Tuesday with a best throw of 85.29 metres. The two-time Olympic medallist dominated the field in this World Athletics Continental Tour (Category A) event, despite falling short of his personal best of 90.23m.
Neeraj’s effort marked his second straight win of the season, following his victory at the Paris Diamond League just four days ago.
Personal Best Eludes, But Form Impresses
Shining in a nine-man field, Neeraj displayed solid rhythm and greater consistency than recent outings, registering four legal throws, all over 80 metres. On his final attempt, with the crowd behind him, he deliberately overstepped the foul line after sensing the throw wouldn’t exceed his 85.29m mark—an indication that he’s chasing more than just gold.
Surprise Podium and Notable Absences
South Africa’s Douw Smith threw a personal best 84.12m to take silver, edging past former world champion Anderson Peters, who managed 83.63m for bronze. Notably absent from the lineup was Julian Weber, Neeraj’s top rival this season and a leading contender for Paris 2024.
Germany’s Thomas Röhler, the Rio Olympic champion, finished a distant seventh with a best of 79.18m, continuing his patchy form.
Building Momentum for Home Debut
With back-to-back wins, Neeraj now heads into his next big challenge: the Neeraj Chopra Classic, India’s first international javelin competition, scheduled for next month. His form suggests he’s on track not just to lead Indian athletics into a new era but also to challenge the 90m barrier once again.
