Nirmala Sitharaman Says Atmanirbharta Means ‘Resilient Interdependence’ as US-EU Trade Talks Continue
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday reaffirmed that trade negotiations with the United States and the European Union are progressing steadily, with both sides working actively to finalise key agreements.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, she said the talks are in “full force,” and India is awaiting the outcomes with optimism, despite recent challenges such as Washington’s 50% punitive tariffs on certain Indian exports. Sitharaman used the occasion to clarify India’s economic philosophy of atmanirbharta (self-reliance), saying it does not imply turning inward. “Atmanirbharta is not isolationism, but resilient interdependence — the ability to meet domestic needs while remaining part of global value chains,” she said.
The minister emphasised that the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision is about creating, innovating, and producing for both India and the world. She said it rests on four key pillars — self-confidence, entrepreneurship, compassion, and responsibility — and integrates economic growth, technology, social welfare, and environmental awareness in pursuit of making India a developed nation by 2047.
Outlining the government’s priorities, Sitharaman identified five major dimensions of self-reliance: economic, social, technological, strategic, and energy independence. These, she said, will be crucial to building a strong, secure, and globally competitive India.
Tracing the concept’s roots, she noted that the groundwork for Atmanirbhar Bharat began in 2014, as the government sought to boost domestic capabilities while deepening international partnerships. Now, she said, that journey is accelerating — with a sharper focus on manufacturing, innovation, and sustainable global trade ties.
