Nitish Kumar Increases Social Security Pension to ₹1,100 Ahead of Bihar Elections.
With the Bihar Assembly elections on the horizon, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a ₹100 monthly hike in social security pensions, increasing the amount from ₹1,000 to ₹1,100. The move is set to benefit lakhs of elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities across the state.
Announcing the decision during a public address, Nitish said the increased pension will help low-income families cope with inflation and reinforce the government’s commitment to welfare schemes.
Beneficiaries Covered:
- Senior citizens under the Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Pension Yojana
- Widows receiving state assistance
- Persons with disabilities under Bihar’s social welfare schemes
The new pension amount will be effective from July 2025, and the state government has already begun preparations for a smooth rollout.
Political Context
The announcement comes at a crucial time, with elections due later this year. Analysts see the pension hike as a strategic welfare move aimed at reinforcing Nitish Kumar’s support among rural and economically weaker sections.
Nitish, who has often focused on schemes targeting the underprivileged, said that the JD(U)-led government will continue to strengthen its social justice platform and ensure timely disbursal of benefits.
