No Lockdown Planned In India, Rumours ‘Completely False’: Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday firmly dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown, stating that no such proposal is under consideration by the government. The clarification comes amid growing speculation triggered by global energy concerns and supply chain disruptions.

Taking to social media platform X, Puri said the government is closely monitoring the evolving global situation. “The global situation remains in flux, and we are tracking developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities in real time. Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi, all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical supplies,” he said.

Reassuring citizens, Puri added that India remains prepared to handle emerging challenges and has consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of global uncertainties. Addressing the rumours directly, he said, “Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. Let me state this clearly—there is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India. In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united.”

He also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, calling attempts to create panic “irresponsible and harmful.”

The minister’s remarks come as concerns over global oil and gas supplies—along with reports of LPG shortages—sparked fears of possible restrictions. However, the government has reiterated that there are no plans to impose limits on public movement or economic activity.

Earlier this week, officials clarified that recent statements by the Prime Minister regarding “preparedness” had been widely misinterpreted. The remarks, made during parliamentary addresses, were intended to highlight administrative readiness in light of tensions in West Asia—not signal any COVID-19-style lockdown.

The speculation also gained traction online as it coincided with the anniversary of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. The government, however, stressed that “COVID-like preparedness” refers only to contingency planning—not stay-at-home orders or restrictions.
