Former US President Barack Obama delivered a forceful appeal to voters on Saturday, urging them to reject.
What he called the “lawlessness and recklessness” of Donald Trump’s administration as he campaigned for Democratic gubernatorial candidates in Virginia and New Jersey. Speaking at a packed rally for Virginia’s Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Obama warned that American politics had entered a “dark and dangerous” period under Trump’s leadership.
“Every day, this White House offers a new dose of chaos, lawlessness, and meanness,” Obama said. “We can’t normalize this. We can’t look away. The only way to fix it is to show up and vote.” The former president accused Trump of governing through division and distraction, citing trade missteps, misuse of federal resources, and his party’s unwillingness to hold him accountable. “Republicans in Congress know he’s out of line, but they stay silent,” he said.
Later in Newark, New Jersey, where Obama campaigned for Democrat Mikie Sherrill, he continued his blistering critique. “It’s like every day is Halloween—except it’s all tricks and no treats,” he joked, drawing laughter from the crowd. Obama also mocked reports of Trump’s focus on White House renovations during a government shutdown. “He’s been hard at work paving over the Rose Garden and building a $300 million ballroom,” he quipped.
Obama’s appearances came as Democrats seek to energize their base ahead of next week’s elections. Polls show Spanberger leading her Republican rival Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, while Sherrill holds a slim advantage over GOP candidate Jack Ciattarelli.
