Khaleel Ahmed Ends Essex Stint Early Due to Personal Reasons.

India’s left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed has returned home early from his stint with English county side Essex, citing personal reasons, the club confirmed on Monday. The 26-year-old had joined Essex in June on a two-month contract intended to cover both red and white-ball formats, but featured in only two County Championship matches before his early departure.

Originally signed to play six red-ball fixtures and up to ten List A matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup, Khaleel’s involvement was limited to just two first-class games, where he took four wickets at an average of 64.50.

“While we are disappointed to see him leave, we fully support Khaleel’s decision and are grateful for his contributions during his time with us,” Essex said in a statement, without elaborating on the nature of the personal reasons.

Khaleel’s signing had followed a strong showing for India A, where he picked up 4 for 70 against the England Lions in a red-ball fixture. His left-arm angle and dual-format versatility were seen as valuable assets for Essex in the latter half of the English summer.

While he struggled to make a major impact during his brief County Championship run, the stint was viewed as an important step in his red-ball development, especially with Indian selectors actively monitoring seam options ahead of a packed home and away calendar.

Khaleel, who last played for India in 2019, has represented the national side in 11 ODIs and 14 T20Is, picking up 15 and 13 wickets respectively. In first-class cricket, he has 60 wickets from 22 matches at an average of 30.13. While better known for his white-ball skills, he has steadily built a solid red-ball profile with Rajasthan.

He was also part of last season’s Duleep Trophy campaign and is likely to be in the reckoning again as the inter-zonal competition returns on August 28 to mark the start of India’s domestic red-ball season. With his county stint ending ahead of schedule, Khaleel is expected to rejoin preparations with Rajasthan or his zonal team in the coming weeks.
