Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held delegation-level talks with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, after receiving a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour at the Perdana Putra building in Kuala Lumpur.
PM Modi and PM Anwar met ministers and senior officials from both sides to review bilateral ties and discuss ways to deepen cooperation across sectors. Addressing the delegation-level talks, PM Modi underlined the importance of close coordination between friendly nations, particularly in the context of global instability.
“The support of friendly nations is crucial in our fight against terrorism. We firmly believe that the prosperity of India and Malaysia is intertwined. In this environment of global instability, it is essential for India and Malaysia, two maritime neighbours, to utilise the full potential of our relationship,” PM Modi said. “The core message of my visit is very clear: India wants to work with Malaysia to take our relationship to a new level and expand cooperation in every possible area.”
Reflecting on his personal engagement with Malaysia, the Prime Minister said he deeply valued the warmth of the bilateral relationship. “I am fully experiencing the height and depth of this friendship, and for this, I am deeply grateful to you. It is my great fortune that as Prime Minister, I have had the opportunity to visit Malaysia for the third time, and to meet you for the fourth time during your tenure,” he added.
Following the talks, PM Modi attended a joint press conference with PM Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister is in Malaysia on a two-day official visit. He arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, where he was personally received at the airport by PM Anwar Ibrahim along with other dignitaries.
PM Modi was accorded a warm welcome, including a red-carpet reception and traditional music and dance performances that highlighted the shared cultural heritage of the two countries. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, PM Modi said he was deeply touched by the welcome extended by the Malaysian Prime Minister and expressed optimism about further strengthening bilateral ties.
The visit is expected to yield agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in defence and security, trade, innovation and emerging technologies. In his departure statement, PM Modi said India and Malaysia’s historic ties have made steady progress in recent years and that he looked forward to further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit carries a rich agenda and is expected to give fresh momentum to the close and multifaceted partnership between India and Malaysia.
