PM Modi Opens Kartavya Bhavan, First of 10 New Government Buildings in Central Vista Overhaul
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the first of 10 planned buildings under the Centre’s ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project. These buildings aim to centralise and modernise ministry offices currently spread across outdated infrastructure in Delhi.
What is Kartavya Bhavan?
Kartavya Bhavan will house offices of major ministries including:
- Home Affairs
- External Affairs
- Rural Development
- MSME
- Petroleum and Natural Gas
- Principal Scientific Adviser’s Office
- Department of Personnel and Training
Timeline for the Rest
- Two more buildings will be completed by next month.
- Another is due by April 2026.
- Two more are targeted for October 2026.
- All 10 buildings are expected to be ready in two years.
- What Comes Next?
After the secretariat buildings, the government will move to construct the Executive Enclave, which will include: - A new Prime Minister’s Office
- Cabinet Secretariat
India House
- National Security Council Secretariat
- A new official PM residence in phase two
Where Will Existing Ministries Go?
Old buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan will be vacated due to structural inefficiency. Ministries will temporarily operate from:
- Kasturba Gandhi Marg
- Minto Road
- Netaji Palace
Buildings That Will Stay
The following structures are currently set to be retained:
- National Museum
- National Archives
- Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan
- Dr Ambedkar Auditorium
- Vanijya Bhawan
This move marks a major step in reshaping the administrative infrastructure of India’s capital under the Central Vista plan.
