PM Modi to Arrive in Canada for G7 Summit, Indian Community Hopes for Diplomatic Reset.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to land in Calgary, Canada, later today to attend the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This marks Modi’s first visit to Canada since bilateral relations turned tense following the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The G7 Summit brings together the world’s most advanced economies—France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Japan, the US, and Canada—alongside representatives from the EU, IMF, World Bank, and UN.
Tensions flared after former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing—an accusation firmly rejected by New Delhi as “baseless.”
Despite recent friction, the Indian diaspora in Calgary is optimistic about a fresh chapter. India Today’s Gaurav Sawant reports strong enthusiasm ahead of Modi’s arrival. “This visit could open doors for renewed ties between India and Canada,” said a community member. Another added, “India’s innovation can be key to Canada’s future. We hope this trip brings both nations closer.”
Several echoed the sentiment that India’s presence at the G7 reflects its growing global stature. “PM Modi’s leadership represents India’s rise. A complete G7 must include voices like his,” said one attendee.
