Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan will be his final release before he steps away from cinema, following his announcement of retirement after a 33-year career.

The film is scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, 2026. Jana Nayagan will face a box office clash with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, which is set for release a day later on January 10, 2026. Ahead of the release, posters of Parasakthi were torn down outside Ritzy Cinemas in Madurai during the trailer screening of Jana Nayagan. Videos of the incident circulating on social media show Vijay fans removing the posters and throwing them to the ground.

The incident has triggered online reactions. An X user, @madraspaiyanda, who shared the video, questioned why Vijay’s fans were unable to “tolerate even a single film clash” involving the actor’s releases and speculated on their reaction when Vijay formally enters politics.

Why Jana Nayagan Is in Focus

Apart from the box office clash, Jana Nayagan has drawn attention as Vijay’s final film before his planned entry into active politics. The film has also been the subject of discussion over its storyline. Addressing speculation that it draws inspiration from the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, director H. Vinoth said audiences should watch the film before forming conclusions.

“I’ll repeat what I said at the music launch,” Vinoth told Cinema Vikatan. “Whether this story is a remake of Bhagavanth Kesari, or whether a few scenes were adapted, or even if just one scene was inspired by it—audiences need not worry about that.”

Vijay Announces Retirement

Vijay announced his decision to step away from cinema at the audio launch of Jana Nayagan in Malaysia. “When I entered cinema, I thought I was building a small sand house,” he said. “But you all built me a palace. Fans helped me build a fort. For the fans who gave up everything for me, I’m giving up cinema itself.”
