Doctor Lists 5 Foods to Avoid and Why — Warns About Herbal Tea Risks.
Dr. Kunal Sood, an anesthesiology and interventional pain medicine specialist known on Instagram as Doctor Sood, regularly shares tips on health, nutrition, and lifestyle. In his latest post on August 10, he highlighted five foods to avoid during pregnancy — and explained the risks behind them.
1. High-mercury fish — risk to baby’s brain and nerves
Large predatory fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and bigeye tuna can have high mercury levels, which may harm fetal brain development and increase the risk of conditions like cerebral palsy or cognitive delays.
2. Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs — risk of listeria and salmonella
Listeria infections can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn infections — sometimes even without symptoms in the mother. Undercooked eggs may carry Salmonella, which in rare cases can infect the fetus and cause sepsis or meningitis.
3. Unpasteurised milk, juice, and soft cheeses — risk of foodborne illness
Raw dairy or juice may contain Listeria, E. coli, or Salmonella, all of which can cause miscarriage or severe newborn complications. Choose only pasteurised products.
4. Unwashed produce and raw sprouts — risk of bacterial infections
Sprouts grow in conditions perfect for bacteria like E. coli and Listeria, which can trigger pregnancy loss or neonatal infections. Wash produce thoroughly and cook sprouts before eating.
5. Herbal teas — unknown risks
Some herbs, such as nettle or alfalfa, may be unsafe in large amounts, especially early in pregnancy. While most commercial blends are likely safe in moderation (1–2 cups daily), avoid concentrated homemade infusions unless cleared by your doctor.
