President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday addressed the nation on the eve of Republic Day, paying tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices freed India from colonial rule.
In her address, the President praised the preparedness of the armed forces in protecting the nation and reflected on India’s democratic journey, constitutional values and shared responsibilities. She highlighted key national achievements and called on citizens to strengthen unity, inclusivity and resilience while working together towards a prosperous, self-reliant and forward-looking India.
Congratulating citizens on the 77th Republic Day, President Murmu said the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on the country’s past, present and future. “The force of our freedom movement changed the status of our country on August 15, 1947. India became independent,” she said.
‘Architects of our national destiny’
Recalling the moment India attained Independence, the President said the nation began shaping its own destiny from August 15, 1947. She added that the full enforcement of the Constitution marked the birth of India as a democratic republic, freeing Bharat from the dominion system.
“Our Constitution is the foundational document of the largest republic in world history. The ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity enshrined in it define our Republic,” she said, crediting the framers for laying a strong foundation for national unity.
Vande Mataram and national pride
President Murmu highlighted the significance of Vande Mataram, describing it as India’s lyrical national prayer. She recalled how nationalist poet Subramanya Bharati popularised the song through his Tamil composition “Vande Mataram Yenbom”, while noting that Sri Aurobindo translated it into English.
She also referred to tributes paid to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary, observed as Parakram Diwas, saying his slogan “Jai Hind” remains a powerful expression of national pride.
Rise of Nari Shakti
The President underlined the growing role of women in nation-building, saying women are breaking stereotypes and contributing across sectors, including agriculture, entrepreneurship, space, sports and the armed forces.
Citing sporting achievements, she said Indian women have set new global benchmarks in cricket and chess, reflecting the country’s rising stature.
President Murmu concluded by saying that Nari Shakti will be central to the vision of Viksit Bharat, and that greater participation of women will help build an inclusive republic rooted in gender equality.
