Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Reasons.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar announced his resignation late Monday night, stepping down from his post with immediate effect. The 74-year-old cited medical advice and the need to prioritise his health as the reason for his sudden departure.

“In accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution, I hereby resign from the office of the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” Mr Dhankhar wrote in his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu. “This decision comes after careful consideration and in adherence to the recommendations of my doctors.”

Dhankhar assumed office in August 2022 and served for just under three years. His resignation adds him to a short list of Vice Presidents who left office before completing their full term—most notably VV Giri and R Venkataraman, both of whom later became Presidents of India.

While there has been no official word on whether Mr Dhankhar will pursue another constitutional role, political observers are watching developments closely.
