In a significant development in the inheritance dispute surrounding late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, his widow Priya Sachdev has told the Delhi High Court that it is a “healthy tradition” for a husband to leave all his assets to his wife.
Representing her, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar argued that Sunjay’s father had followed the same practice by bequeathing everything to his wife, Rani Kapur. “There is nothing unusual about a husband giving all his assets to his wife. Even my client’s father-in-law did so in his will. It is a healthy tradition that appears to have continued,” Nayar said.
He also informed the court that a printout of Sunjay Kapur’s will was shown to him in February, shortly before his death, and that Sunjay himself proposed certain changes. Those revisions were incorporated into the final draft dated March 17, 2025.
The Legal Battle
Since Sunjay Kapur’s death, a fierce dispute has unfolded within the family over his will. Karisma Kapoor’s children — Samaira and Kiaan — have moved the Delhi High Court, seeking a share in their father’s assets. They have alleged that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, forged Sunjay’s will. The children have also filed a fresh plea to prevent Priya from selling, transferring, or altering any of Sunjay’s assets until the matter is resolved. Karisma Kapoor is not directly involved but is representing her children in the proceedings.
Sunjay’s Sister Slams Priya Sachdev
Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur, has sharply criticised Priya Sachdev, accusing her of demanding secrecy around the inheritance process. Speaking on the podcast InControversial with Pooja Chadhuri, she alleged that Priya was avoiding transparency at every step.
“You wanted an NDA. You wanted the will in a sealed envelope. And now you don’t want a forensic test. What are you hiding?” Mandhira said, calling Priya a “fraud” and vowing to fight the case to its conclusion.
“This isn’t her money. This is theft. This is fraud. And the country needs to wake up and see it,” she added.
