Priya Sachdev Kapur Opens Up About Painful First Marriage: “Even My Ex-In-Laws Apologised”

In a candid and now widely circulated interview, Priya Sachdev Kapur, wife of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, has spoken publicly for the first time about the emotional turmoil she faced during her first marriage to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal.

The heartfelt interview with Kin and Kindness on YouTube gained renewed attention after Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death on June 12 in London. He reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack after accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match. He was 53.

Opening up about her past, Priya described how her relationship with Chatwal seemed ideal on paper. “He ticked all the boxes—Wharton, Morgan Stanley—I had done a double major in Mathematics from UCLA and LSE. It looked like a perfect match,” she recalled. “But just like with careers, relationships don’t always go as planned. I thought I made the right choice… but I chose wrong.”

Priya revealed that doubts began to surface early in the marriage, particularly after she became pregnant. “Around 15 to 20 weeks into my pregnancy, I knew this marriage wasn’t right. Still, I tried to make it work—for years.” Eventually, after five years, she made the difficult decision to walk away, prioritizing her own well-being and that of her daughter.

Reflecting on the aftermath, Priya shared an emotional moment of validation. “My ex-in-laws called me and apologised. I wasn’t appreciated for the sacrifices I made, but that moment felt like a personal victory.”

She also spoke about her long custody battle, saying, “It wasn’t easy, but I won. That was another turning point.”

Looking back, Priya said her healing truly began when she took control of her internal struggles. “The voices in my head didn’t bother me anymore. Once I learned to manage them, I began to see life differently.”
