Punjab Police on Saturday registered an FIR against former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and his personal assistant in connection with the alleged suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa in Amritsar.

The case was filed at Ranjit Avenue Police Station based on a complaint by Randhawa’s wife, Upinder Kaur, who accused the trio of sustained harassment, assault, and mental torture that allegedly drove her husband to take the extreme step.

Randhawa, a District Manager with the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, consumed poison and died during treatment at a private hospital on Friday. Before his death, he recorded a brief video message in which he blamed Bhullar for pushing him to suicide.

Minister removed, probe ordered

The incident has sparked a major political row, prompting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to remove Bhullar from the Cabinet. Mann also directed Chief Secretary KAP Sinha to probe the circumstances leading to the officer’s death, stating that such incidents under alleged political pressure would not be tolerated.

Opposition mounts pressure

Opposition parties have stepped up their attack, demanding strict action and announcing plans to protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence. Bikram Singh Majithia termed the minister’s removal an “eyewash” and called for a CBI probe, urging that a murder case be registered.

Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar demanded Bhullar’s immediate arrest, questioning the government’s accountability. Congress leaders, including Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Gurjeet Aujla, met the victim’s family and sought a CBI inquiry into the case.

Political flashpoint

Leaders across parties had earlier protested outside the police station before the FIR was filed, underscoring the mounting pressure on authorities. The case has now emerged as a major political flashpoint in Punjab, with demands for accountability and a fair investigation intensifying.
