PM Modi Thanks Putin for Call on Trump Meet Amid U.S. Tariffs on India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for calling him and sharing details of his recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. “India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard,” Modi posted on X, adding that he looked forward to continued exchanges with Putin.
The August 15 Alaska summit between Trump and Putin focused on a possible Ukraine ceasefire but ended without an agreement. Trump later called the talks “very productive” but said the onus was now on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European nations to push peace forward.
The meeting came days after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on select Indian goods and an additional levy on Russian oil imports by India, alleging New Delhi was helping fund Moscow’s war effort through discounted crude purchases. India’s Ministry of External Affairs had earlier welcomed the summit, calling the two leaders’ engagement “highly commendable” in pursuit of peace.
