Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that the “understandings” reached with U.S. President Donald Trump at their August summit in Alaska had opened a path toward peace in Ukraine.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Putin said he valued the mediation efforts of both China and India. He added that he had already briefed Xi on his talks with Trump and would share further details in bilateral meetings.
“For the Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and long-term, the root causes of the crisis must be addressed,” Putin said, again accusing the West of trying to draw Ukraine into NATO.
Kyiv and its allies maintain that Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 was an attempt to annex territory and undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.
