PV Sindhu’s dream of a historic sixth World Championships medal ended in heartbreak in Paris.

The two-time Olympic medallist fell in the quarterfinals to higher-ranked Putri Wardani on Friday, August 29, at the Adidas Arena. Sindhu staged a brave comeback to force a decider, but the 23-year-old Indonesian held her nerve to prevail, denying the Indian star a podium finish on National Sports Day.

A year after missing a medal at the Olympics, Sindhu had shown she was still at the top of her game, having stunned World No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi of China in the previous round. However, despite her valiant effort in the quarters, Sindhu went down 14-21, 21-13, 16-21 in an hour and eight minutes, narrowly missing out on becoming the first women’s singles shuttler to win six World Championships medals.
